Huerta del Valle - Jurupa Native Plant Nursery

Applicant: Huerta del Valle/IERCD

Project Summary: Huerta del Valle (HdV), a non-profit urban farm, has offered to host a native plant nursery for the IERCD at their new location in Jurupa Valley. The nursery will be used by both parties to grow local native plants for restoration sites and to provide to community members at public events. In addition to providing a space, HdV will provide volunteer and staff hours to help manage the nursery. In return, IERCD staff will assist with HdV volunteers and staff training to ensure proper nursery management.

In order to begin developing the site, as required by the Jurupa Area Recreation and Parks District, HdV needed support to construct fencing around the property to ensure protection of the community garden, nursery, and structures.

  • Installed main irrigation lines and drip lines

  • Dug out compost trench and infiltration basin

  • Measured and flagged out swales and channels around site stockpiles and spread mulch

  • Planted lemongrass, cactuses, and sugar cane

  • Measured and mapped native plant labyrinth

  • Promoted and held weekly community meetings
